Dr Claire P. Ayelotan is a scholar whose interdisciplinary work encompasses Theology, Religious Studies, and Law. Her research critically examines child witchcraft accusations, spiritual governance, and safeguarding policies within Nigerian Pentecostal diaspora networks. She earned her PhD in Theology and Religious Studies from the University of Roehampton. Her scholarly contributions have significantly informed academic and international policy debates concerning faith-based ritual harm.
Her upcoming monograph, ‘Yoruba Pentecostalism and Child Witchcraft Accusations‘ (University of Rochester Press, September 2025), develops new insights into belief-driven harm, gender roles, and ritual practices within transnational settings. During her time at OMSC, she will also initiate work on a second book that builds upon her previous theological analysis of biblical eisegesis, especially regarding Mark 9:14–26, in the context of child witchcraft debates in African Pentecostal communities.
Although her academic perspective is critical of harmful religious practices, Dr Ayelotan’s personal faith remains rooted in the Catholic tradition, shaped by daily prayer and pilgrimage. She is deeply committed to fostering culturally sensitive safeguarding approaches grounded in justice, compassion, and the dignity of every child.
At OMSC, she looks forward to a season of reflection, writing, and shared learning within a global community of mission scholars, fostering scholarly exchange and deeper understanding.
