Dr. Kyama Mugambi (PhD) is Assistant Professor of World Christianity at the Yale Divinity School. He specializes in historical, ecclesial, social, cultural, theological, and epistemological themes within African urban Christianity. His book, A Spirit of Revitalization: Urban Pentecostalism in Kenya (Baylor University Press), has been hailed as a singular contribution to the fields of mission studies, world Christianity, and intercultural theology. He recently co-authored with Prof. Mark Shaw a book on contemporary expressions of Christianity in Nairobi (Bloomsbury Academic). His current book project takes an in-depth look at ontological themes within Pentecostal spirituality in the African context. Kyama Mugambi is the faculty lead for the MacMillan Centre’s Project on Religion and Society in Africa. The project engages critical religious inquiry into the connection between religion and societal wellbeing, and how the flourishing of persons and societies can be promoted on that basis.
Seminar: Holy Spirit Movements and Worship in World Christianity
Date: November 18-20 (Monday-Wednesday)
Holy Spirit movements, particularly Pentecostals, are some of the fastest-growing expressions of Christianity in the 21st-century world. In Africa alone, they make up a third of the continent’s 700 million Christians. Using Pentecostals in Africa as a case study, the seminar uses religious imagination as a category to examine key themes in pneumatic Christian experiences. The seminar invites the participants to engage with the material in ways that inspire multi-disciplinary conversations with implications on Global Christianity.
