José Luis Magaña Rivera

José Luis Magaña Rivera is an economist and researcher from El Salvador dedicated to the intersection of economic policy, socio-environmental justice, multidimensional inequalities, and community advocacy. His background combines economic studies at the Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas” (UCA), governance and democracy with the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), and theological studies at Palmer Theological Seminary (Eastern University). José Luis works closely with the Red Continental Cristiana por la Paz (RECONPAZ) and various grassroots movements. He accompanies local communities in the defense of their territories against extractivism, as well as in the training and organization of local economies through a solidarity economy approach. He has published on tax justice, inequalities across Latin America, the social and solidarity economy, food sovereignty, and climate finance. During his residency at OMSC, his research will focus on how Central American ecumenismo comunitario (community ecumenism) redefines ecological debt, aiming to provide advocacy tools for fairer, non-debt climate finance policies.
